For the last couple of days, I was experimenting on our new Nintendo Wii. I’ve heard that you can play NES games on it, but I didn’t know how to do it. Now, I know. I was playing Super Mario and Contra yesterday on my Wii. Yeah, the old Super Mario that we used to love and the old Contra with 30 lives.
So how did I do it? First, a disclaimer. What I’m going to share worked on my Wii, but I’m not sure if it will work on your Wii. Don’t make me pay for your Wii if it suddenly got bricked. Try at your own risk. Ok? Ok.
Let’s start. First, you need the following:
- SD card formatted to FAT32.
- A computer with an SD card reader.
- Your Wii, obviously. I’m not sure if this works with a modchipped Wii. My Wii runs on firmware 3.2U, in case you want to know.
- Perfect attention to details. Yes, you need this. Follow instructions carefully to avoid bricking your Wii.
Now, here is the step by step guide:
1. Install the Homebrew Channel. You can find a very detailed guide complete with screenshots and links to the files you need on Lifehacker. Click here and follow the instructions religiously. After you install the Homebrew Channel, come back here and go to step 2.
2. Install the NES emulator on your SD card. The NES emulator for Wii is known as the FCE Ultra GX.
a. Download here. (Right click, Save Link As..)
b. Extract the downloaded file using Winzip or Winrar.
c. Copy the apps and fceugx folder to your SD card. Copy it on the root. Do NOT put it on any folder.
d. Copy your NES Roms (*.nes files) to /fceugx/roms/ folder on your SD card. If you don’t have NES roms, you can download them at DopeRoms. These are the games that you will be playing once the emulator is installed successfully.
3. Run the NES emulator on your Wii.
a. Insert the SD card on your Wii.
b. Select the Homebrew Channel.
c. Select the FCE Ultra GX.
d. Select your game from the list.
e. Enjoy!
