Smart Freedom Plan Is The Perfect Plan For Me

I’ve been a Smart Buddy user eversince I learned to use a cellphone. Really. I preferred the prepaid SIM instead of the postpaid plan because I can easily control my expenses. I’m not a fan of postpaid because of the attached monthly fee and lock-in period.

Then came the Smart Freedom Plan. And after reading what it is, I’ve decided to try it. Why? Because though it is a postpaid plan, there is no attached monthly fee and there is no lock-in period. I only pay for what I use, up to P600 per month. Which means that if I only spent P100 for calling and texting for a month, I will only be billed P100. If I don’t use my phone for a month, I will have nothing to pay. I think, the P600 credit limit is good enough for me since I only load P300 once every two months when I’m on prepaid.

They have “bucket” list which I can opt to subscribe to if I want to. Like ALL Text 200 which gives me 2000 texts to all networks and 150mb of mobile surfing for 30 days. But these are purely optional, I can subscribe anytime I want and be billed from what I used. If I don’t use any of those “buckets”, then, standard rates apply, like piso per text, P6.50 per minute call Smart to Smart and P10 per 30 minutes mobile surfing.

Application Experience

Applying for the plan is not that easy as advertised if you are a freelancer like me. They require a student ID or a company ID, both of which I don’t have. They said they need an ID with my billing address on it, so I showed my driver’s license. Then, they asked me if I have a credit card, and when I said yes and showed them my card, they let me go on with my application.

I just filled up the forms given to me and they required me to pay the P250 enrollment fee via my credit card. After paying, they already gave me my SIM card, which is already activated when I reached home.

I enrolled it on my.smart.com.ph and subscribed to e.Statement, so I can get my bills thru my email.

So far, so good. The bill starts at zero. Monitoring my expenses is done by texting BILL? to 211.

If you are on prepaid and you are tired of expiring loads and buying prepaid cards, you must try this.

Msvcrt.dll Error On Redsn0w When Jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1

If you experience crashing Redsn0w while jailbreaking your iPhone, then you’re not alone. A lot of people reported such problem. Here’s how I fixed it:

The error is about msvcrt.dll causing the crash while running RedSn0w on Windows XP with Service Pack 3. The solution, download a new msvcrt.dll here: http://dll.softandco.com/dll/download-3/Msvcrt.dll.html

Extract that zip file and replace the msvcrt.dll on your C:/Windows/system32/ folder. (Make sure to backup the original msvcrt.dll just to have a copy when the unexpected happens).

After replacing, you’re good to go. Run RedSnow and the crash will be gone. Well, that’s how I fixed my problem.

iPhone 4S Looks Like an iPhone 4

So, Apple announced iPhone 4S recently. It has new cool features. It has a dual-core A5 chip, 8 megapixel camera, iOS 5, iCloud and Siri.

However, it looks like an iPhone 4.

Testing the WordPress iPad App

I recently bought an iPad 2 on the Apple Store. It took more than 2 weeks before it arrived but it is all worth the wait. It has an engraving at the back.

Now, I’m testing the WordPress App if I can really post properly on my blog using this app. This post is my first post using the iPad and the App.

I’m a little bit confused with the keyboard. I can’t find the arrow keys. I’m still exploring and installing free apps on the app store.

Apple March 2 Event Is Today, iPad 2 To Be Announced?

There will be an Apple event today. Rumor has it that a new Apple iPad 2 will be unveiled today. But still, we don’t know yet until it happens.

Several blogs and websites promised to cover it and do live blogging. I don’t promise anything but I know, someone in BT might write about whatever announcement Apple will make today.

Apple is already announcing an iPad 2 and probably an iPhone 4 while I don’t even have a single Apple product yet. I can’t afford them. I just have apples and oranges at the refrigerator.

Anyway, here’s a picture of green apples.

This Blog Is Now Using a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

This blog and most of my sites are now running under a content delivery network aka CDN. Basically, a CDN is a computer network all over the world used to deliver content, as the name implies . It speeds up the delivery of content because content is being delivered to visitors from the nearest server available to them.

For example, if somebody from Amsterdam visits this blog, instead of downloading all the static files (css, jpg, ico, js, etc..) directly from my host (Dreamhost), the files will be delivered from a server in Amsterdam, making it load faster. If someone from LA visits this blog, it will receive the files from an LA server.

Aside from speed advantage, it lightens the load on my server. It will only serve the static files to the CDN and the CDN will be the one delivering them to the visitors. Bandwidth and memory usage decrease which in turn pull down my monthly hosting payment.

I just paid $39.95 for the CDN for 1 TB bandwidth for 1 year, speed up my sites and made a monthly savings on my hosting payment of around $50. This means that I paid $39.95 to save $600 in one year. Not bad, isn’t it? Though $39.95 is just a promo price, the regular price is only $99, which I’ll pay on my second year. Still, an advantage for me.

I use MaxCDN for my CDN needs. The CDN used by John Chow, Mashable and CopyBlogger. I’ll be posting a tutorial on how to implement MaxCDN to a self-hosted WordPress blog using WP Super Cache in the near future. Most of the tutorial I see online uses W3 Total Cache. Since I’m a WP Super Cache user and I don’t like changing plugins just to use another service, I studied and found a way to implement CDN using WP Super Cache. I’ll blog about it later, maybe tomorrow.

Angry Birds Download for Windows XP and Windows 7

Last December, I bought a PSP for my wife. I’ve wanted to buy another one for me, but I was able to fight the urge. That’s too much. One PSP in the house is enough.

I’ve played several games already, like God of War, Loco Roco, NBA 2K11, Fight Night, Gran Turismo and Tekken 6. But none of them had me hook for literally hours except Angry Birds!

The game is simple. Eliminate all the pigs by catapulting those angry birds to the structures. Some levels are easy. But some will literally take you hours to finish.

Angry Birds is available on different platform. It was so popular, it was already downloaded 50 million times. An Angry Birds cartoon show is even in the works right now.

It is now available for Windows XP and Windows 7. I just don’t know why Windows Vista was left behind. You can download Angry Birds for Windows XP and/or Windows 7 at Intel AppUp.
