Earthquake On July 18, 2008?

It’s been circulating on e-mail, blog posts and text messages. They say that someone by the name of Juseleeno Nobulega Daroose predicted that an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 will hit the Philippines this coming July 18, 2008.

Well, July 18 is just 10 days away from now. Phivolcs already said that this is an e-mail bogus. “There is no basic science behind it,” Phivolcs Director Renato Solidium Jr. said.

It is a fact that Philippines is located on the earthquake belt, and earthquake can come anytime soon. It could be today, it could be tomorrow, it could be a month later. But no technology has been made yet to accurately predict the exact date of an earthquake, including its magnitude. So, this prediction is simply an intelligently crafted prediction, picking a country on the earthquake belt for a higher probability of becoming true. If it happens, then good guess, he’ll say “I told you so!”. If it doesn’t happen, he’ll say that the prayers saved the Philippines from this earthquake. Hehe. Palusot!

So, here’s my counter prediction. No earthquake on magnitude 8.1 will happen on July 18. Maybe, little tremors at around 0.1 magnitude. But not as high as 8.1. And I will earn more than $30 on that day on Google Adsense because of people googling about this. 🙂 Let’s see who’s the real modern day Nostradamus. Hahaha!
